Learn about Jesus

Jesus is famous

More books have been written about him and more songs have been sung to him than anyone else who has ever lived. Our calendar literally revolves around Jesus. He has changed our world like no one else, despite the fact that he never wrote a book, commanded an army or held a political office. But who is Jesus? Why did Jesus die and then rise and what does his death and resurrection mean for us?

Jesus is a man

About 2000 years ago, in a country stable, Jesus, was miraculously born to a virgin teenager. Jesus was born into a lower–class Jewish family and became a carpenter like his father Joseph. Jesus ate, slept, worked like every man until the age of 30, when he began his public ministry. For the next three years, Jesus taught people, loved people and performed miracles in front of people. Jesus calmed storms, walked on water, healed the sick and raised the dead.

Jesus is God

Jesus is the God-man who is both fully human and fully God. He did miracles that only God can do and forgave sins like only God can do (Mark 2:5). The gospel of John tells us that Jesus eternally existed, and that all things were made by Jesus, through Jesus and for Jesus (John 1:1-10). Jesus is not only a man but he is “our great God and saviour” (Titus 2:13).

  • Why did Jesus die and then rise?

Jesus is a Savior

Luke 19:10 says that Jesus “came to seek and to save the lost” and the apostle Paul says in 1 Timothy 1:15 that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”. God’s Son came to earth on a mission — to save sinners. He lived the perfect life that we could never live and then died a painful death that we deserved. The Bible is clear that all are sinful and have fallen short of the glory of God and that the wages of sin is death. Why did Jesus have to die? He had to die in our place so that the righteous anger of a just God could be satisfied. Why did he rise? Jesus had to be raised from the dead to defeat Satan, sin and death. If we place our faith in him we can have our sins forgiven and one day conquer death with him.

  • What does this mean?

Jesus is King

The good news of Christ’s death and resurrection for us is amazing and potentially life-changing. Anyone who has faith in Jesus can receive the forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. Jesus is the king of kings and Lord of Lords who wants us to repent of our ways, and follow Him. In Mark 8:34-35 Jesus explained what it looks like to follow him “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it (Mark 8:34-35)”. Following Jesus looks like praising him, loving his people, serving other people and telling others about Jesus.
